Seeking an Apprenticeship, Trainee Position, or Entry-Level Role in Civil Engineering
This portfolio presents a series of engineering projects developed to demonstrate practical design skills, technical understanding, and the ability to take concepts from initial idea through to tested, functional outcomes.
Each project follows a structured process of research, design development, prototyping, and evaluation, with a focus on problem-solving, iteration, and practical application.
Before beginning Product Design at A level, I developed practical engineering skills through a series of domestic construction projects. Beginning with fundamental construction techniques and progressing to increasingly complex structural work, these experiences developed my understanding of planning, measurement, construction sequencing, quality control, and practical problem-solving. They provided a strong foundation for the more advanced engineering projects that followed.
Completed when I was 12, this project involved assisting with the installation of a loft boarding system to create safe storage while preserving the thermal performance of the existing insulation. The project introduced me to construction sequencing, accurate measurement, material handling, and the importance of understanding how structural support, insulation, materials, and construction sequencing must work together to achieve a safe and practical result.
Completed when I was 15, this project involved assisting with the installation of a suspended structural chipboard subfloor as part of a domestic garage conversion. Working alongside my father, I helped measure, cut, level, and install the floor structure while learning practical engineering principles, including structural support, quality control, dimensional accuracy, and problem-solving on a real construction project.
A domestic construction project involving the relocation of a timber stud partition wall to reconfigure an internal living space. The project developed practical experience in structural construction, construction sequencing, trade co-ordination, quality assurance, and solving real-world challenges throughout the build.
The following projects demonstrate how early practical experience developed into a more structured engineering approach. Through A level Product Design and personal projects, I have built upon those foundations by applying CAD, engineering design, manufacturing, testing, and evaluation to increasingly complex challenges.
Designed and manufactured a fully functional engineering trolley as part of A Level Product Design, taking the project from initial concept through to a tested prototype. The project involved CAD modelling using Onshape, engineering drawings, material selection, workshop manufacture, iterative design development, and performance evaluation. Throughout the project, design decisions were refined through testing and practical problem-solving to improve functionality, stability, and manufacturability.
A live engineering diary documenting the construction of a masonry outbuilding from foundations to completion. Each update captures the planning, engineering decisions, construction methods, and problem-solving involved as the project progresses.
